How to Prepare for an Author Visit

KEYS TO MAKING YOUR AUTHOR VISIT THE BEST IT CAN BE:

I suggest you read THE BUBBLE GUM FAIRY, THE HAPPY FACED SPIDER, SWEETLIPS, and/or THE FLYING JEWELS ahead of time to the classrooms. This will help the children make a connection between the book and the author on the day of my visit. Familiarity with the story will also create excitement and generate questions. I may ask for some volunteers to participate in a fun little exercise during each of the presentations.

WHERE CAN I ORDER BOOKS?

All books can be ordered from Mrs. Terry!  Use the book order forms I have made available in this kit. It’s the easiest and most efficient way to satisfy book requests. All books are sold at the school for the discounted price of $15.00 each. When I come to your school on the day of the Author Visit, I will bring enough books to fill the student orders. I’ll be happy to sign the children’s books at a time that is convenient for you. I’d love to pass them out and meet the students who bought them, if possible!

WHAT DOES THE AUTHOR NEED FROM THE SCHOOL?

  • LCD projector with stand. Be sure you have the cord that connects the computer and the LCD projector. (I’ll bring my laptop and my own sound system.)

  • A small table or chair to set my speaker on.

  • Screen or wall to view group presentation on.

  • A couple bottles of water.

  • Please be sure you arrive to the presentations several minutes before it is scheduled to begin. That way I can begin on time, so I can end on time for the next group. Thanks so much!

  • If I am doing a workshop with the students, I will need a white board or chalk board to write on, chalk or markers, and an eraser.

Workshops – In all workshops, please be sure the students bring:

  • Paper and pencil

  • A book to write on if they will not be in desks or at a table. It is fine if we sit on the floor and work.

  • In “Poetry Rocks” or “Let’s Get Creative” Workshops – Have the class

divided into groups of 4 – 5 people, so they know ahead of time what group they are in.
